The islet of Monemvasia used to be a promontory that was harshly cut off from the mainland after a devastating earthquake in 375 A.D. It has a height of 300m and it is made entirely out of steep colourful rock. Slowly, it was evolved into a famous castle-town and became the strategic base of trade and the military fleet of the Byzantine Empire, from which one could control the Eastern Mediterranean sea, while it was the last stronghold of the Byzantines to fall. Many people including the Venetians, the Turks and the Pope himself longed for it, conquered it and have put their stamp on it. Today, it is a living and picturesque medieval castle-town, one of the most beautiful of the Mediterranean sea, preserving its narrow cobbled paths, buildings and vaulted arches, open to quest and exploration, with many traditional shops and taverns scattered around. It is not suitable for people with mobility problems and walking shoes are necessary. A proper visit of the lower town takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. With the visit of the upper town about 2,5 hours. It is slippery in general and the visit of the upper town is difficult, not for everyone, but it is worth the visit because of the church of Agia Sofia and the magnificent view. No entrance fees.
