“The path”
Our path starts from the Mountaineering Refuge at 1550 m  altitude. After a while we exit the fir forest and we enter the alpine zone where the peak rises above us. In the vast area of alpine fields, following the rapid and rough ramp lead us to ”Portes” point at 2250m altitude. The pyramid-shapped peak stands in front of us. A last final push will reward our effort. 2407m above sea level everything looks close to us!

After the descent to the refuge, we ride our bicycles and we follow the dirt road across the dense forest. The gravity is our ”engine”. 15 kilometers of intense downhill till we reach the valley. Now Sparta is 16 kilometres away to the north through numerous olive tree fields, traditional villages and restaurants/taverns with home made traditional food!

Final distance traveled, 7 hiking and 31 riding!

Loved it! A very satisfying day in a beautiful place, with great staff

I feel honored to have been the first person to experience this tour. It was a fantastic way to spend the day, starting with an off-road drive to the refuge as the sun rose, then a beautiful hike, and ending with a downhill mountainbike ride. The hike is very rewarding; it's a progressive ascent, not too steep so there's no scrambling involved, and the view from Profitis Ilias was spectacular. The ride down to Sparta from the refuge was a fun way to finish, using a different set of muscles. The first few km are easy tracks, but I believe there is an option to take more challenging routes through the trees, and the last kms are flatter, through olive groves and villages, with very little traffic until you get into Sparta. John Mentis was an excellent guide - great company, easy to talk to (in English) and clearly experienced. He adapted his pace to mine, and provided plenty of interesting local knowledge. This was a unique experience and I highly recommended it. Thank you Laconia Travel!
